MUNICIPALITY OF CHESTER
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Position Title: Custodian
Department: Infrastructure and Operations
Salary Band: Labourer
Reports to: Director, Public Works Division
Status: Full-time Position (7 hours per day)
Classification: Non-Administrative
Location: Normally Municipal Complex (King and Central Streets), subject to
change
Hours: 35 hours per week, with operational adjustments as necessary
Date: October 2021
SCOPE
This incumbent will be responsible for cleaning Municipal office buildings in a safe and efficient
manner.
OBLIGATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES UNDER LEGISLATION
1. The Municipality of the District of Chester is committed to workplace safety and all employees
are expected to actively participate in the Municipality’s Occupational Health and Safety Policy
and Program and Occupational Health and Safety Legislation as well as Regulations of the
Province of Nova Scotia.
2. The Municipality of the District of Chester complies with the Employment Legislation of Nova
Scotia and all employees are also expected to act in accordance to the appropriate Legislation
as well.
QUALIFICATIONS
A Combination of education and experience, which provides the following knowledge, abilities
and skills:
1. Knowledge of building maintenance and cleaning practices, supplies and equipment.
2. Ability to understand and follow oral instructions.
3. Ability to perform physical labour for extended periods.
4. Must have a valid driver’s license.
5. Ability to communicate and work with staff, public and Councillors in professional manner.

SUMMARY OF FUNCTION
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Provides cleaning and janitorial services including regular cleaning of floors, washrooms,
kitchen, windows, walls and office equipment as indicated on check list sheets, including
vacuuming, dusting, damp wiping, sanitizing, spot cleaning, sweeping, and mopping.
2. All washrooms to be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected, with all supplies replenished daily
(five in the main building, and two in the annex building).
3. All non-carpeted (tile/vinyl) floors to be swept/mopped daily.
4. All glass in foyer and stairwell to be cleaned weekly.
5. All ledges, sills, bases, desks (following request from staff), tabletops, chairs and other areas
inspected weekly and cleaned as required with normal frequency of bi-weekly.
6. Lower flags before dark.
7. Clean the Council Chambers, Committee Rooms and associated rooms directly upon starting
duties in the afternoon. If meetings are scheduled, please straighten up and finish a complete
cleaning after the meeting. Ensure the meeting rooms are ready for early morning meetings
the next day.
8. Notify the Supervisor of any requirement for maintenance or cleaning supplies.
9. Notify the Supervisor with any maintenance problems promptly.
10. Ensure that all buildings are secure, alarm armed if necessary, interior lights out, all windows
and doors locked, etc. if possible, before leaving premises in p.m.
11. Ensure that all lights are functioning properly.
12. Replenish cups and water bottles, including one (1) reserve bottle for water coolers in all
buildings.
13. Arrange at least bi-weekly that vault floors are properly cleaned and treated.
14. All marks, fingerprints, etc. on any walls are to be removed promptly.
15. Only Municipal dishes, silverware, coffee mugs etc., in kitchen areas (two in main building and
one in annex) to be washed thoroughly and put away. All personal staff containers will be
looked after by those staff members.
16. Inspect the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and Dehumidifier daily, as well as report
any malfunction.
17. Regardless of the generality of the foregoing, the person(s) selected for this position will be
expected to carry out all duties and responsibilities as assigned.
18. Empty all garbage/recycling/compost containers daily.

19. Replenishes all paper products and hand soap dispensers as required;
20. Empties and sorts all waste receptacles daily, ensures garbage and recyclables do not
accumulate in buildings, and keeps waste receptacles clean and sanitized;
21. Sets out waste to curb for collection;
22. Notify the Supervisor of any requirement for maintenance or cleaning supplies;
23. Notify the Supervisor with any maintenance problems promptly;
24. Ensure that all buildings are secure, alarm armed if necessary, interior lights out, all windows
and doors locked, etc. if possible, before leaving premises in p.m.;

expected to carry out all duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Essential Criteria and Competencies
1. High School Diploma
2. A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience
3. Ability to complete tasks independently with minimal supervision
4. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
5. Strong work ethic and a positive team attitude
6. Ability to perform the physical demands of the position including but not limited to lifting,
standing for extended periods, bending/crouching, etc.
