HomeMy Public PortalAboutHeavy Equipment Operator_Job Description_Solid Waste_2018-02-11 Position Title: Heavy Equipment Operator Salary Band: Skilled Labourer Department: Solid Waste Reports to: Solid Waste Working Supervisor/Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Status: Permanent Fulltime Classification: Non-Administrative Location: Kaizer Meadow Environmental Management Centre, Subject to Change Hours: Normally 7:30 am to 4:00 p.m. – Monday to Friday, Subject to Change 8:00 am to 4:00pm – Saturday, Subject to Change Date: June 1, 2016 SCOPE The employee is required to operate heavy equipment and other equipment, perform preventative maintenance on equipment and complete other assignments as required. OBLIGATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES UNDER LEGISLATION 1. The Municipality of the District of Chester is committed to workplace safety and all employees are expected to actively participate in the Municipality’s Occupational Health and Safety Policy and Program and Occupational Health and Safety Legislation as well as Regulations of the Province of Nova Scotia. 2. The Municipality of the District of Chester complies with the Employment Legislation of Nova Scotia and all employees are also expected to act in accordance to the appropriate Legislation as well. QUALIFICATIONS 1. A combination of education and experience, which provides the following knowledge, ability and skills. 2. Ability to operate site equipment including all heavy equipment. 3. Ability to perform semi-skilled maintenance and repair tasks on heavy equipment without supervision. 5. Ability to perform physical labour for extended periods. 6. Must have a Class 3 driver’s license including air brakes. (Employees required to operate tandem truck). 7. Ability to understand and maintain various aspects of the landfill and leachate treatment systems. 8. Ability to understand and maintain the various aspects of the HHW facility. 9. Ability to understand, comprehend and obtain certification in courses relevant to the landfill operation i.e. confined spaces, transportation of dangerous goods, first-aid etc. Fall protection, asbestos awareness, chain saw safety, and certified by the Safety Council of Nova Scotia for the equipment they operate (Certification obtained from the Commercial Safety College, Masstown, NS). 10. Awareness of the potential hazards involved in working at a Solid Waste Facility. 11. Snow removal. 12. Ability to set grades on ground work. 13. Ability to run sewer truck. 14. Ability to do maintenance on water treatment plants. SUMMARY OF FUNCTION Principle Duties and Responsibilities: 1. Operate equipment; perform preventative maintenance, and other daily routines as assigned by the Landfill Supervisor. 2. Assist in the general maintenance of the site and access roads. 3. This employee must recognize that he/she is a public servant and must use the utmost respect at all times when dealing with other staff, waste collectors and the general public. 4. Record numerical and written information related to items in the Solid Waste Facility including waste identification, waste origin as well as maintenance logs for the machinery. CONTACTS 1.
