Position Title: Corporate Communications and Public Relations Assistant
Salary Band: Seasonal/Summer Student, Level 1
Department: Corporate and Strategic Management
Reports to: Communications Officer & Outreach Coordinator
Status: Full-Time, Summer Position (May to August)
Location: Municipal Office primarily with 1/day per week remote possible
Hours: 35 hours/week, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Communications and Public Relations for local government is an excellent opportunity to
expand your skill set and branch out into all aspects of the communications field. In this
position, you will gain experience in public engagement, media relations, promotions and
marketing, policy, and strategic work in the corporate context.
SCOPE
The Corporate Communications and Public Relations Assistant will be responsible in assisting
the Communications Officer & Outreach Coordinator in developing internal and external
corporate communications on the local government level. Experience will be gained in social
media content development, campaign development and management, policy research and
development, digital public relations and engaging with a broad audience, corporate internal
communications using existing tools, and occasional media relations. The right candidate
would be positive, friendly, organized, resourceful, and proactive in nature.

2. The Municipality of Chester complies with the Employment Legislation of Nova Scotia and all
employees are also expected to act in accordance with the appropriate Legislation as well.
3. All employees are expected to comply with the Municipality of Chester Human Resources
Manual.
QUALIFICATIONS
• All candidates must have a high school education.
• Preference will be given to candidates with some post-secondary education in public
relations, communications, and/or a related field.
• Must be computer literate.
• Preference will be given to candidates with a solid working knowledge of social media
platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Threads)
SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS
Principle Duties and Responsibilities:
Social media
• Assisting in developing a 12-month corporate social media calendar that includes
municipal project and program information, diversity initiatives, and observances
recognized by the Municipality.
• Creating content for the Municipality of Chester’s corporate social media accounts,
including basic graphic design.
• Assisting the Community Economic Development Officer in promoting tourism social
media campaigns, if required.
Policy/Strategy
• Assisting in developing and implementing a corporate image-building campaign.
• Working with the Communications Officer & Outreach Coordinator and Junior Policy
Analyst in developing internal and external Social Media Guidelines.
• Assisting in developing a public engagement strategy, including outreach to community
stakeholders.
• Accompanying the Communications Officer & Outreach Coordinator to internal
Strategic Management Team meetings to engage with managers and gain knowledge of
capital projects that will inform future communications strategies and plans.

Marketing & Promotions
• Working with all Departments in organizing and formatting information for the
Municipality’s End-of-Year Report that will be used as a marketing tool for economic
development opportunities, public relations, and reporting.
• Assisting in formatting and designing material to promote equity, diversity and
inclusion strategies, such as presentations, surveys, newsletters, etc.
Media Relations
• Assisting in creating media releases, key messaging documents, and position
statements, as required.
