This full- time seasonal position (a minimum 16-week term from April to August 2024) will support the development of the Municipality’s Asset Registry. This work will involve refining asset data hierarchy and standards, inputting and managing data in the Asset Registry, assessing gaps in existing asset data, and collecting asset data during on-site inspections of capital projects and during operations and maintenance programs. Current enrolment in a post-secondary Geographic Information Systems program or related discipline with an emphasis/major in GIS is required. This is an opportunity for a GIS program student to fulfil the mandatory 5-week field placement and gain further experience through a summer employment term. Page | 1 Position Title: Summer GIS Technician Salary Band: 1 (pro-rated from full-year term) Department: Infrastructure & Operations Department - Public Works Division Reports to: Manager, Sustainability & Asset Management Status: Summer Position – April to August Location: Municipal Complex (151 King Street) and various locations throughout the Municipality Hours: Normally 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily Monday to Friday, subject to change. Date: February 2024 SCOPE Reporting to the Manager, Sustainability & Asset Management, and working closely with the GIS Specialist, the Summer GIS Technician will support the development of the Municipality’s Asset Registry. This will require working with staff of the Public Works Division to refine asset data hierarchy and standards, to input and manage data in the Asset Registry, to assess gaps in existing asset data, and to collect asset data during on-site inspections of capital projects and during operations and maintenance programs. MUNICIPALITY OF THE DISTRICT OF CHESTER POSITION DESCRIPTION Summer GIS Technician – Job Description Page | 2 QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience  Current enrolment in a post-secondary Geographic Information Systems or related discipline with an emphasis/major in GIS is required.  Experience with GIS with web services and applications, gathering user requirements and/or performing spatial information management tasks is required.  Demonstrated knowledge of GIS principles and use of ESRI's GIS software and techniques, including ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Online is an asset. Skills/Knowledge/Competencies  Strong computer skills including ability to use related software (i.e. Microsoft Office, ArcGIS etc.). Knowledge of ArcGIS software considered an asset.  Ability to use GPS equipment in the field.  Strong analytical and communication skills to convey data clearly and accurately.  Independent self-starter with the ability to manage small projects.  Ability to conduct professional interactions with staff, stakeholders, and the public.  A valid Nova Scotia Driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle. PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The following is an outline of the duties and responsibilities involved in this position. It is also not intended to limit the employer’s right to assign other duties.  Assist with defining, structuring, and documenting asset data specification, collection, and management needs for the Municipality’s Asset Registry.  Assist with data collection, data management, and simple map preparation using ArcGIS Desktop software in accordance with Asset Management Strategy priorities.  Create web map applications using ArcGIS Online.  Conduct field visits to map infrastructure assets.  Observe and implement occupational health and safety practices helping to ensure all regulations and requirements of by-laws and statutes are followed as required.
