Position Description
Position Title: Active Living Coordinator
Department: Recreation & Parks
Reports to: Director of Recreation & Parks
Salary Band: Middle Managers /Coordinators
Status: Three Year Term
(October 2012 to October 2015)
Classification: Administrative
Location: Normally Recreation & Parks Office, 151 King Street, Chester
Updated: November 2012
Hours: Normally Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm (Variable)
SCOPE
This is a professional position with the primary responsibility for implementing the Municipality of
Chester Active Living Strategy under the supervision of the Director of Recreation & Parks. The
incumbent will work closely with the Planning Department, the Public Works Department and
various community groups.
QUALIFICATIONS
• University degree in recreation or planning.
• Previous employment experience in a municipal setting or a combination of training and
experience that demonstrates a capability to assume the duties of Active Living Coordinator.
SUMMARY OF FUNCTION
Responsibilities (Based on Active Living Strategy)
1. Capacity Building
a. Programs: Works with municipal staff and community organizations to increase the
number and quality of physical activity opportunities for families and
individuals.

b. Leadership: Recruits new leaders and /or enhances the skill sets of existing leaders and
instructors for various active living programs and initiatives.
2. Active Transportation (AT)
a. Develops and implements an AT plan that includes an analysis of existing AT
opportunities, identification of gap areas and the creation of action plans.
b. Increases public awareness related to the importance of physical activity and its
connection to active living.
c. Assists with the development of a marketing strategy for active living programs, services
and amenities.
3. Policy and Planning
a. Advises Municipal staff and Council on policy development related to active living.
4. Monitoring & Evaluation
a. Develops monitoring and evaluation tools to regularly measure efforts related to capacity
building, active transportation, public awareness, and policy and planning.
S. Other Responsibilities
a. Maintains and creates networks and working relationships with regional, provincial and
national agencies concerned with active living and physical activity.
b. Maintains accurate records of work activities including monthly reports.
C. Develops and maintains a positive image when dealing with the public.
d. Participates in the team work of the Recreation & Parks Department.
e. Performs related work as required.
6. General Knowledge and Skills
a. Good knowledge and understanding of recreation delivery in Nova Scotia.
b. Strategic planning skills.
C. Knowledge of physical activity including benefits, trends, barriers and interventions.
d. Demonstrated competence at community development, facilitation, and partnering.
e. General knowledge of municipal administration and management and general municipal
government operations.
f. Demonstrated ability to work with committees, community representatives and various
levels of government.
g. General knowledge of Geographic Information Systems, including ArcGIS.
h. General knowledge of Windows -based computer systems, and computer applications.
i. Effective written, oral, and graphic communication skills, including public speaking skills.
