Zach Churchill, Minister Department of Natural Resources 3rd Floor, Founders Square 1701 Hollis Street P.O. Box 698 Halifax, Nova Scotia B3J 2T9 Nov 10, 2014 Dear Minister Churchill, I write today on behalf of the Board of Directors and members of Forest Products Association of Nova Scotia, to voice our concern over your government’s intention to put forward regulatory/legislative changes that would lead to Sunday hunting in Nova Scotia. With almost the entirety of our 600+ membership being private landowners in this province – Sunday hunting is an issue that would affect us all. In its current state, hunting and trapping on forested land in this province already presents landowners with a unique set of issues to deal with. From trespassing, to illegal trapping, to property damage and theft, to dangerously close calls between hunters and woods workers – our members feel hunting seasons (in all their forms) do not need to be extended to be a 7- day-a-week activity. We believe this is completely unnecessary given that hunting seasons – deer hunting in particular - have already been extended in recent years. FPANS believes it is time that landowner rights trump land user rights on the topic of hunting. In the coming weeks, our association will be working with other landowner and industry associations to ensure the voice of those who live and work in our province’s forests are heard on this issue, and that Sundays will continue to be a safe opportunity to work and enjoy our province’s forests. We are also sharing our opinion with all Nova Scotia’s MLAs, Mayors and Wardens and MPs– and encourage them to support our request for no Sunday hunting. We encourage your government to drop your consideration of allowing Sunday hunting in our province – and protect the rights of landowners in our province instead. Sincerely, Jeff Bishop, Executive Director Forest Products Association of Nova Scotia Cc: Premier McNeil, All NS MLAs, All NS Mayors and Wardens, All NS MPs
