Dear Municipal Partners and South Shore REN;
In 2015, South Shore Tourism Team (SSTT), a collaborative group comprised of industry and
municipal economic development representatives, completed a comprehensive marketing plan to
promote Nova Scotia’s South Shore as a destination. These activities were supported financially
by 38 private and 11 municipal partners as well the Nova Scotia Tourism Agency.
For 2016, the South Shore Tourism Team suggests a plan that is more public relations focused
combined with cooperative advertising and digital strategies to take advantage of the limited
funding opportunities through Tourism Nova Scotia. Efforts will strategically target the Ontario,
Quebec and North Eastern US markets in the spring 2016. These activities will be combined with
a more Atlantic Canadian focus activities for summer and fall 2016.
Novascotia.com/southshore will continue to be the SSTT gateway page. Copy on this landing
page will be updated and used it as the URL for all communications and links for activities
administered in 2016. SSTT is firm in the commitment to support and drive all traffic to this
website to ensure simplicity and ease of use for the travelling public.

Promotions & Advertising Plan 2016
March 12, 2016
2 [SOUTH SHORE TOURISM TEAM PROMOTIONS & ADVERTISING PLAN 2016]
2 South Shore Tourism Team Promotions & Advertising Plan 2016
In keeping with Nova Scotia’s overall goal of growing tourism revenues to $4 billion by 2024, it
is imperative that while each business takes on its own challenges, a regional and collaborative
approach be facilitated and used within the South Shore region.
In 2015 the South Shore Tourism Team was founded and undertook a comprehensive marketing
plan to promote Nova Scotia’s South Shore as a destination primarily within Atlantic Canada.
These were achieved with financial investment from private and municipal partners and the Nova
Scotia Tourism Agency.
Building on the achievements and frameworks established in 2015, the 2016 program will involve
a mix of tactics that will include digital, co-op print advertising and more aggressive public
relations focused effort, all of which will be fueled by collaborative South Shore approaches. We
will take advantage of any funding opportunities that are available however they are limited.
Therefore, we have created a plan that will leverage the individual business and tourism operator’s
activities to create a positive image of the destination through communications strategies and
tactics. The initiatives proposed within this plan do not substitute efforts of partners and
businesses, they are incremental and collaborative meant to provide regional promotions and
advertising reach.
The South Shore Tourism Team will focus on developing dialogue about the South Shore’s assets
and experiences to influence consumers purchasing behavior. Reaching our markets through an
integrated approach that leverages and strategically builds momentum and top of mind awareness
is critical. This plan will promote tourist services, products and events under a unified region.
Our collective focused efforts will integrate with and leverage the strategic direction and assets
of Nova Scotia Tourism Agency and our regional partners and guided by an effort to appeal to
‘Authentic Explorers’ and ‘Cultural Enthusiasts’ within Ontario, Quebec and North Eastern US
and Atlantic Canada and primarily, New Brunswick.
The $144,900 Promotions and Advertising Plan will be made possible through the following
investment formula and must be confirmed by April 1, 2016:
$7,500 Tourism Nova Scotia Partner Opportunities
$17,500 50 investing businesses and organizations @ $350 each
$13,500 Investment from Eleven Municipal units within the Shelburne, Queens, Lunenburg
Counties and Western Halifax County utilizing the REN formula
$66,400 Co-op Advertising
$40,000 In-kind investment of time, prizing, etc for 2016 program
The following 2016 Plan outlines marketing tools, strategies and resources intended to use to
promote South Shore as a destination. We will speak to our target markets of Atlantic Canada,
[SOUTH SHORE TOURISM TEAM PROMOTIONS & ADVERTISING PLAN 2016] 3
South Shore Tourism Team Promotions & Advertising Plan 2016 3
Ontario, Quebec and North Eastern US, by utilizing iconic experiences and landmarks as a
gateway to introduce the south shore experience.
The following outlines the components of the Promotion and Advertising Plan 2016:
WEBSITE: NovaScotia.com/SouthShore
In 2015, SSTT expanded its presence within www.NovaScotia.com rather than takin on a new
website. With more than 1 million visitors and growing, this website is the hub for travelers
looking at Nova Scotia as a destination, our effort will continue to expand and leverage a
gateway developed with NSTA. NovaScotia.com/SouthShore will be utilized again in 2016. The
South Shore Tourism Team will update the copy on this landing page and use it as the URL for
all communications and links for any activities administered in 2016. It will be tweaked
seasonally with Tourism Nova Scotia with South Shore Tourism’s guidance and approved copy
and pictures.
NOTE: It is imperative and critical that all tourism businesses, communities and events regularly
review and update their own information on NovaScotia.com as this will be the ‘hive’ for all our
efforts. Taking advantage of optimization is the responsibility of the partners, not SSTT.
SEM Campaign: Google AdWords
Search Engine Marketing is an important way to increase awareness about our region as a
destination. In 2015, SSTT undertook a $9000 campaign with success in collaboration with
NSTA. In 2016 the Tourism Nova Scotia partner opportunity allows South Shore Tourism Team
to invest in SEM using Tourism Nova Scotia’s partnership with Google. Application has been
made to the SEM opportunity with Tourism Nova Scotia to acquire matching investment funds.
The markets targeted with this opportunity will be Ontario, Quebec and North Eastern United
States. This campaign will run from April to July 2016 and drive traffic back to
novascotia.com/southshore content.
Campaign Costs: $10,000, $5000 from South Shore Tourism
Campaign Dates: April to July 2016
FACEBOOK
While our 2015 campaign 'Would you Rather’ contest generated entries, the fall contest which
was a simpler message with a call to action of signing up for a newsletter gathered more entries,
likes and newsletter sign ups. This program was undertaken with the assistance of NSTA. This
year the program will build on the learnings, the framework established but fuelled by
investment from the partners.
We will undertake a spring and fall Facebook contest campaign with goals to grow Facebook
‘likes’ and newsletter sign-ups. This will grow our email lists for future eblasts and marketing
opportunities. For each of the 2 campaigns there will be a $1000 valued prize that will be
positioned and promoted. The prize components will be contributed in-kind from partners.
Implementing this initiative will require SSTT to expand on the regional Facebook Page, while
using the NovaScotia.com newsletter sign-ups resulting in a shared list.
Campaign Cost: $3000, $2000 of in kind prizing, $1000 for advertising

MANAGEMENT
The South Shore Tourism Team will ultimately be responsible for the deployment and delivery of
the Promotions and Advertising plan. Ensuring that the goals, benchmarks and measurements are
in keeping with the direction of the overall plan.
While it has been challenging without having an incorporated organization in place to serve as the
parent for the South Shore Tourism Team, a collaborative partnership approach has been
successfully used to move the team to the present time. Efforts have been preoccupied with
preparing an achievable Promotion and Advertising Plan that strengthens communication and
collaboration within the region while being results and revenue growth oriented. The Team
acknowledges that it will need to formalize again, however wanting to leverage and complement
streamlined efforts. We anticipate working closely with the recently formed Regional Enterprise
Network as the tourism forum for the region.
Until a partnership is in place the team will require support services of a consulting Promotions
Coordinator for coordination of activities and someone who will ensure the opportunities are
leveraged to maximize the effectiveness and growth of the campaigns.
