Position Title: Scale House Operator

Reports to: Solid Waste Working Supervisor/Wastewater Treatment Operator
Status: Full time

Location: Kaizer Meadow Landfill, Subject to Change

Hours: Normally 7:30 am to 4:00 pm – Monday to Friday, Subject to Change
8:00 am to 4:00 pm Saturday, Subject to Change

SCOPE
The Scale House Operator will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the weigh scale
at the landfill site entrance, public drop off site and its entire component reporting systems, both
manual and computerized, as well as dealing with the public.
OBLIGATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES UNDER LEGISLATION
1.The Municipality of the District of Chester is committed to workplace safety and all employees
are expected to actively participate in the Municipality’s Occupational Health and Safety Policy
and Program and Occupational Health and Safety Legislation as well as Regulations of the
Province of Nova Scotia.
2.The Municipality of the District of Chester complies with the Employment Legislation of Nova
Scotia and all employees are also expected to act in accordance to the appropriate Legislation as
well.
QUALIFICATIONS
Grade 12 preferred or equivalent experience in municipal solid waste weigh scale operations
and/or any other applicable qualifications.
Must be willing to work in a computerized environment. Familiarity and comfortable with
operation of computers.

SUMMARY OF FUNCTION
Principle Duties and Responsibilities:
The following is a general outline of the duties and responsibilities of the Scale House Operator. The
listing is not intended to be all inclusive or to limit the employee’s initiative to expand his/her
function beyond this scope nor is it intended to limit the Landfill Supervisor’s right to assign other
duties:
1.
Recording weights, types and sources of incoming waste.
2.
Preparing weight.
3.
Keeping separate records, as required, of “special wastes” entering the site (such as construction
and demolition wastes, metals, etc.).
4.
Cleaning and maintaining the scale platform and base to ensure safe and accurate operation. This
includes snow removal.
5.
Cooperation with other employees to ensure smooth operation of the facility.
6.
Monitoring the operation of the scale and assisting with repairs as necessary.
7.
Monitoring incoming materials and directing vehicle drivers to suitable dumping locations in
cooperation with other site personnel.
8.
Treating the public courteously at all times.
9.
Sharing responsibility for site security gates (opening and closing).
10.
Preparing and issuing invoices to customers and collecting tipping fees.
11.
Preparing direct deposit reports.
12.
Utilizing computer software package to generate weigh scale records and reports.
13.
Record is kept of the general region or areas from which the contents of each vehicle are
originating.
14.
Responsible for assisting with the separate general public disposal area.
15.
Responsible for monitoring and maintaining the software required for the daily operation of the
computer at the scale house.
