Chester Municipal Civic Addressing By-Law #139 states that all owners of a
building must post the assigned civic number for that building. The
Municipality will be actively enforcing the Civic Address By-Law. Any person
who does not post their civic address number can be subject to a fine of up to
$10,000.00.

Emergency Services are asking Chester Municipality to enforce the existing Civic Addressing By -law. Men and women of
the Volunteer Fire Departments give their personal time to help others. They are usually the first responders in an
emergency and they can have trouble finding the site or the emergency if civic numbers aren’t displayed.
When an emergency vehicle misses a driveway it causes delays in reaching someone who is in serious trouble. Precious
minutes pass by while the vehicle finds a place to turn around somewhere down the road.
Emergency responders work more effectively when responding to a 911 call if everyone posts their civic number. Th e
civic address ensures that the person responsible for finding you or your neighbour can do it easily to save lives and
property.
Canada Post is requiring you to post your civic number and to use it on your mailing correspondence. Other delivery
and service people are also relying on your civic number to find your house.
Please remember that your civic number plate has to be posted on the same side of the road as your building and must
be visible from the highway. Civic number plates must be made to the by-law specifications.
Posting your civic number ensures fast emergency response for:
1. AMBULANCE SERVICE
2. FIRE SERVICE
3. POLICE SERVICE
