These guidelines are only to be applied to that portion of the lateral that is located on private property that e xtends from the property line to the building connection. For sewer laterals owned by the Municipality within either the road right of way or an easement, refer to the Municipal Specifications Manual. 1. Minimum pipe size 100 mm (4 in) diameter PVC DR 28 with bell and spigot gasket joints. 2. Recommended minimum grade on a lateral is 2% (two feet of grade on 100 feet) discretion may be exercised to reduce the grade to 1% (one foot in 100 feet) if required to avoid pumping or maintain depth of cover . Pipe should be installed as per Section 33 31 00 of the Standard Specifications for Municipal Services, latest edition and the Municipal Specifications. Bedding and backfill shall be Type 1 gravel as per the typical trench detail. 3. Recommended depth of a lateral is 1.2 m (4 ft) under a driveway and 1 m (3 ft) below other areas. Discretion may be used to avoid pumping but in any event, the lateral must be protected from frost as requested by the Engineer. 4. Clean-outs are required at a maximum spacing of 25 m (85 ft), the property line or as required by the Engineer. Clean- outs shall be a wye type or approved manhole. 5. Pipe must be installed with the bells facing “uphill” in the direction of the dwelling. 6. Abandonment of an existing sewer lateral shall be either a glued cap or watertight plug. Paint cap and stub red. Place marker stake in from of capped stub and paint red as per drawing 33 31 00. 7. Backwater prevention valves are required and installed in an accessible location, according to the Canadian Plumbing Code. Standard of approval is as manufactured by Canplas or Mainline. 8. If a pump is required, it must be protected with a double check valve assembly. Pressure line shall be minimum 50 mm (2 in) diameter PVC DR 26 complete with internal rubber gaskets or polyethylene pipe to AWWA C901. 9. Care should be taken to locate the lateral away from utility poles, trees and other form of shrubbery. 10. Existing septic tanks must be by-passed before connection to the municipal sewer. 11. It is recommended that septic tanks be pumped and removed or filled with appropriate material. Contact local Nova Scotia Environment Office for requirements. 12. Property owner(s) shall allow Municipal personnel access to property during installation of lateral(s) as well property owner(s) responsible to obtain all other required permits. 13. Property owner responsible to ensure minimum separation distances between sewer lateral and well/water lines are met as per the Nova Scotia Well Construction Regulations. 14. Service lateral(s) shall not be buried prior to inspection by Municipal Engineering & Public Works personnel. Leakage testing of the connection for infiltration of water, and video inspection reporting of the installed lateral may be required prior to final approval by the Engineer. In all cases, service lateral installation(s) are subject to the Engineer’s final inspection and approval. 15. Municipality shall be responsible for attaining Work Within Highway Right -of Way Permit from the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal for work executed in the public right -of-way. Any costs associated with obtaining this permit shall be the responsibility of the property owner. THE INSTALLATION MUST BE INSPECTED PRIOR TO BACKFILLING. THE HOURS OF INSPECTION ARE BETWEEN 9:00 AM AND 3:00 PM, MONDAY TO FRIDAY. NOTIFY THE MUNICIPALITY 48 HOURS IN ADVANCE OF ANY INSTALLATION BY CALLING (902) 275 -1312. I hereby have read and agree to comply with the Guidelines for Installation of Sewer Later als on Private Property as shown above. The Applicant acknowledges that they are responsible for the full cost of connecting to the Municipal Sewer System. A deposit for the amount above is required before the connection can be completed. In the event tha t the actual cost is less than the deposit, the difference will be refunded. If the cost is more, you will be billed for the difference. Any balance owning under $5.00 will not be invoiced and any overpayment under $5.00 will not be refunded.
