Position Title: Wastewater Systems Operator

Reports to: Wastewater Facilities Supervisor

SCOPE
This is skilled work where the employee is responsible for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance
of the Municipality’s sewage collection and treatment facilities all the while ensuring environmental
compliance, as well as assisting with the maintenance and repair work of municipal properties.
OBLIGATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES UNDER LEGISLATION
1.The Municipality of the District of Chester is committed to workplace safety and all employees are
expected to actively participate in the Municipality’s Occupational Health and Safety Policy and Program
and Occupational Health and Safety Legislation as well as Regulations of the Province of Nova Scotia.
2.The Municipality of the District of Chester complies with the Employment Legislation of Nova Scotia and
all employees are also expected to act in accordance to the appropriate Legislation as well.
QUALIFICATIONS
A combination of education and experience, which provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills:
Level 1 Wastewater Treatment and Collection Certifications or ability to obtain.

Certifications related to the Scope of this position would be an asset.
2.
Knowledge in the construction of wastewater collection and treatment.
3.
Experience in the operation of wastewater collection and treatment systems.

Knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and precautions necessary for safe and efficient

operation and maintenance of collection and treatment systems.
Ability to perform physical tasks under varying weather conditions.
6.
Possession of a valid driver’s license.
7.
Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
8.
Ability to perform semi-skilled maintenance and repair tasks without immediate supervision.
9.
Ability to perform physical labour for extended periods.
10.
Ability to complete both verbal and written reports (i.e. checklist style).
11.
Willingness to take training for various courses as required.
12.
SUMMARY OF FUNCTION
Principle Duties and Responsibilities:
Sewer Maintenance
1.
Serve as back-up Direct Responsible Charge, as defined by Nova Scotia Water and Wastewater
Regulations, for the Chester, Chester Acres, Chester Basin, New Ross, Western Shore, and Mill Cove
Wastewater Systems and Mill Cove Fire Protection System.
2.
Conduct inspections of Sewage Treatment Plants and complete necessary reports and maintenance as
required ensuring satisfactory operation.
3.
Conduct visual and physical inspections of the lift stations and associated transmission systems, and
complete necessary reports and repairs, as required for satisfactory operation.
4.
Carry out process and compliance monitoring (sampling and testing program) as directed (ph, chlorine
residual, suspended solids, etc.) to ensure wastewater treatment’s operating within Federal and/or
Provincial permitted limits, as well as follow up on any non-compliant results as necessary.
5.
Purchasing supplies and recommend purchases to the Wastewater Systems Supervisor.
6.
Deal with enquiries and complaints from the public.
7.
Notify the Wastewater Systems Supervisor of any maintenance problems promptly.
8.
Arrange for and complete new hook-ups to sewer systems as required.
9.
Complete the necessary sewer systems repairs and conduct adjustments as required, seeking
professional assistance when necessary.
10.
Work overtime and Holidays to visually inspect all plants, collection systems, and lift stations, and if
necessary, complete modifications or repairs, as required.
11.
Work weekends as part of a scheduled rotation.
12.
Supervise Public Works Maintenance Staff when they are assigned, in relation to the repair and
maintenance of sewer systems.

13.
Responsible for the proper operation and maintenance of an assigned municipal vehicle.
14.
Responsible for the proper operation of any assigned municipal tools and equipment.
15.
Receive or check all packing slips and store all incoming shipments associated with sewer systems
maintenance and notify the appropriate personnel of any errors.
16.
Perform other sundry duties as assigned.
Building and Property Maintenance
1.
Notify the Director of Engineering and Public Works of any maintenance problems promptly.
2.
All walkways associated with the sewer systems are to be properly swept and cleaned. During the winter
they are to be kept free of snow and ice, including ramps, stairs, and exits.
3.
The parking lots associated with the sewer systems are to be kept free of debris and kept generally clean,
as required.
4.
Carry out inspection of municipal building/office on weekend for any issues, i.e. loss of water, power, etc.
5.
Responsible for the proper operation and maintenance of any assigned municipal tools and equipment.
6.
Assist with maintenance work on other Municipal properties when necessary.
7.
Regardless of the generality of the foregoing the person(s) selected for this position will be expected to
carry out all duties and responsibilities as assigned. The premises are expected to be maintained in a
satisfactory and proper manner.
8.
Perform other sundry duties as assigned.
DIRECT SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervises those staff in all facets of the work to be completed who are assigned to work on sewer systems
from time to time.
