MUNICIPALITY OF THE DISTRICT OF CHESTER: “GONE WITH THE WIND”
MUNICIPALITY OF CHESTER – Council for the Municipality of Chester will submit an
application on September 19 to develop a 2.3 megawatt wind-to-energy project under
the provincial COMFIT Renewable Energy Program. COMFIT (community feed-in tariff) is
an incentive program to establish an energy supply using natural and sustainable
resources.
Development will be at the Kaizer Meadow site where Minas Basin Pulp and Power
Corporation has collected wind data for the past two years. The Municipality has agreed
to use Minas Basin Pulp and Power’s services to oversee the design, construction and
long-term operation of the facility.
“The project cost is estimated at approximately $5 million and will generate a positive
cash flow beginning in year one of just under $2 70,000,” says Allen Webber, Warden for
the Municipality of Chester. He further indicates that revenue will increase annually
over the 20-year life of the project to approximately $700,000 in Year 20.
The Province will review all applications over 90 days and advise th e Municipality of
their decision the latter part of December.
“The project is consistent with the objectives of our Integrated Community
Sustainability Plan by creating economic activity and reducing our carbon footprint,”
Warden Webber pointed out. “Revenue will lessen our dependence on property taxes
as the only way to support the growth and development of our community and its long-
term sustainability.”
