The Municipality of the District of Chester and Student Council for Forest Heights Community School recently completed a collaborative venture that takes tenting to a whole new level. Early this year, the Municipality and Student Council began discussing the possibility of building a small area beneath the wind tower near Kaizer Meadow Environmental Management Centre for overnight visitors. The seed was planted when a resident requested to camp on the site soon after the tower’s completion. Although the request was denied at the time because of liability issues, it sparked an idea with the Warden. “The idea of developing a lodging area under the wind tower was too unique to ignore,” says Warden Allen Webber. “The more we discussed sharing the natural beauty of the space and the possibilities of creating something with value and potential, the more real the project became.” Student Council was tasked with researching regulations and drafting conceptual designs. With the assistance of municipal staff, the students identified a list of requirements and prepared the site. Corporate funding, given by the developers of South Canoe Windfarm and South Shore Ready Mix, aided greatly in equipping the site with amenities. Representatives from both the Municipality and Student Council gathered today for the campsite’s grand opening. Kathryn Green, Student Council President, presented a time capsule that will be “buried” inside the wind tower to commemorate the occasion. The area can accommodate several tents, has a fire pit with granite seating, picnic table, portable washroom facilities and an exceptional view of the Municipality’s wind tower. Because of its proximity to Card Lake, trails and wilderness areas, it makes it a prime location for eco-tourism opportunities.
