MUNICIPAL COUNCIL ADOPTS NEW BRANDMARK
MUNICIPALITY – With brandmark development being a provocative topic around the
Council table lately, it was with anticipation that the results of the recent opinion survey
were revealed.
Residents chose sunny “Option 2” as the Municipality’s new logo by a substantial margin.
In fact, it received over 65% of the votes able to be counted.
Option 1 – 196 votes Option 2 – 369 votes
From the beginning, it was obvious that choosing a brand for the Municipality was a
process very personal to many residents. From the sentimental to the sarcastic, the design
firm hired to develop the brand (Sperry Design Inc.) received many comments and ideas
from the public via public meeting and online survey.
From there, packaging culture, history, tradition, growth, relaxation, commerce, and skills
in one uncomplicated design that evokes promise and contentment at home and abroad
was a challenge to say the least. After reviewing eleven options altogether, Council chose
the two logos above and asked residents to weigh in on the final selection via opinion
survey. Throughout the entire review process, Councillors received both positive and
negative feedback from residents; demonstrating strong community beliefs.
The experience was largely positive with opportunity for constructive discussion about
what the Municipality means to all of its residents within and without boundaries. In the
end, a clear preference by the public was established.
“Choosing a logo that will represent our district to the world is a very careful process,”
says Warden Allen Webber. “Council has had many productive discussions and
differences because it’s not only personal to our residents, but also to us. We believe that
the logo ultimately decided upon by the public is pure, unpretentious, and representative
of our area. We can now move forward using that design to attract the economic and
residential growth that we need.”
Choosing a brandmark brings the Municipality to the final phase of this project -
developing a “brand story”. In a report, Sperry Design will provide Council with a brand
story to give the logo meaning and context for its use. This includes use in conjunction
with other municipal symbols like the existing crest. The Municipality’s position is to
retain the crest and elevate its use in a more official capacity, similar to a coat of arms.
