MUNICIPALITY OF CHESTER COMPLETES PARTNERSHIP AGREEMENT WITH
SUSTANE TECHNOLOGIES, PROMISING INCREASED SUSTAINABILITY IN SOLID
WASTE MANAGEMENT
CHESTER, NS – The Municipality of Chester is pleased to announce an innovative
partnership and long term waste supply agreement that will significantly enhance waste
diversion levels, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate other environmental
impacts associated with landfilling.
With today’s signing, the Municipality enters an agreement to partner with Sustane
Technologies Inc., an advanced recycling company who have pioneered technologies
capable of delivering zero waste solutions. The Sustane plant is a significant step for the
Municipality and this agreement enables the innovative project to move from concept to
reality, reinforcing Chester’s history of leadership in waste management.
“The waste industry is evolving,” says Allen Webber, Warden for the Municipality of
Chester. “If we cannot compete, we are no longer viable as a landfill. We have always
been progressive in deploying smart technology and Sustane offers a fresh, practical and
non-traditional solution to a traditional problem.”
Logically sited at the Kaizer Meadow Environmental Management Eco -Industrial Park,
Sustane plans to break ground this fall and be in operation in late 2017.
The $16 million facility, to be built and operated by Sustane will operate 24 hours a day,
7 days a week and have the capacity to process 150 tonnes of household and commercial
garbage per day at full capacity. Sustane will hire 25 employees to run the fully -
automated operation.
“Sustane is a Nova Scotia Company and we are proud to be partnering with the
progressive Municipality of Chester” noted Peter Vinall, CEO for Sustane. “In Chester we
have found a partner that shares our vision and our passion for protecting the
environment with innovative yet practical recycling solutions”. “This will be a showcase
operation that will be a model for other Municipalities to observe and adopt”.
Sustane Technologies Inc. employs a unique set of proprietary technologies, developed
and proven in Spain that allows for almost complete recycling of household and
commercial waste (garbage) and potential elimination of landfills. The advanced
separation processes deliver value-added products instead of being a financial and
environmental liability to society. Products from the Chester facility will include clean
biomass fuel pellets for industry, recyclables (metals and plastics) as well as liquid fuels in
the future. This material currently all goes to landfill and generates significant
greenhouse gasses, all of which will be eliminated with this new process.
The process does not involve waste combustion, produces very little noise or odour, and
over 90% of the garbage is diverted to be used as value-added products.
“We have long believed that solid waste can be recycled and turned into a useful resource
and this technology does just that,” Warden Webber further states. “We owe it to future
generations not to leave them to solve the problems of today.”
With the support and collaboration from all three levels of Government, this partnership
is poised to be a revolutionary model for the way municipalities handle solid waste.
