HomeMy Public PortalAbout2016-11-28_MR_#foodfight_FINAL MEDIA RELEASE LUNENBURG COUNTY – The Municipality of Chester and the Town of Bridgewater have declared a Food Fight! A friendly challenge has sprung up between the two municipal units that will determine who can collect the most food for their local food banks. The rules are simple. The number of food items divided by the number of staff/councillors determines the final tally. The municipal unit with the highest tally, wins! The public can track progress at www.chester.ca/engage/foodfight Food for Thought, The number of people accessing food banks is escalating. According to Food Banks Canada, 23,840 Nova Scotians were assisted by food banks in March 2016, a 20.9% increase over 2015. Of those 23,840 people, 30.4% were children. The challenge of finding enough money each month to buy food on a regular basis is an ongoing one; one that affects not only those on a limited income. Many single -parent and multiple- parent families with employment income use food banks as the expenses associated with raising a family, like housing and transportation, take their toll. We are asking communities to join the Town of Bridgewater and Municipality of Chester by also dropping off their food or gift card donations at each participating municipal building during office hours. At this time of year, food banks particularly need nuts, crackers (not saltines), juice and gravy. Other ideas are pasta, rice, cereal, peanut butter, canned goods, and food for school lunches. In addition, baking ingredients are always welcome, as are things like tea or coffee and spices. Many food banks also distribute non-food items like personal hygiene products, lightbulbs, and birthday party supplies. The race closes at the end of the work day on Friday, December 16, and the municipal unit with the most food gets bragging rights. Are you willing to accept the challenge?
