YOU HAD LUNCH…WHERE?
MUNICIPALITY OF CHESTER –There’s something about a 38-tonne compactor crushing
garbage bags and sofas that transfixes a kid –well, at least the kids that visit Kaizer
Meadow Landfill.
Grade Two students from Aspotogan Consolidated Elementary School (ACES)arrived at
the Landfill on June 6 to kick off Environment Week. Part of the special day included a
tour of the actual Landfill in operation as well as games and lunch.
“I think it’s great for the kids, and I hope you (the Municipality) do it again next year,”
says Mrs. Scott, Grade Two teacher at ACES.
For the last five years, the Municipality of the District of Chester has invited schools to
send students to Kaizer Meadow Landfill for field trips during Environment Week.
Initially, the reactions were mixed. Now, teachers are enthusiastic and students look
forward to coming.
“All of the kids, and many of the teachers, had never been to a Landfill bef ore,” says Kirk
Symonds, Educator for Region 6 Solid Waste Management. “I think a lot of them are
surprised at how systematic, and not smelly, a modern landfill is.”
Yes, the Municipality has come a long way from the traditional open burning garbage
pits and containers of hazardous waste seeping into waterways. Although it was never
that extreme at the municipal site, it was common practice across Nova Scotia. That is,
until the provincial government regulated waste disposal and worked with
municipalities to improve the situation. Now, with a lined landfill site, increased sorting,
and frequent environmental testing, it’s safer than ever.
“Kaizer Meadow has very little impact on the surrounding environment,” says Tammy
Harnish, Client Services Coordinator for the Municipality. “We want to teach kids that
every effort should be made towards responsible waste disposal, starting with us.”
