MEDIA RELEASE
WESTERN SHORE – “Small Farm, Big Impact” is the theme of this year’s Agriculture Day
scheduled to happen at Oak Island Resort and Conference Centre in Western Shore. The one-
day event is in its sixth year and attracts between 100 and 150 farmers, interested newcomers
and public across Southwest Nova Scotia.
Agriculture Day is the inspiration of partners Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture, Region of
Queens, and Municipalities of Chester, Lunenburg and Yarmouth and is open to all, free-of-
charge, thanks to the partner contributions and sponsorship of South Shore Opportunities
CBDC.
“The innovation with which agricultural leaders in our part of the Province are advancing the
industry is outstanding,” says Allen Webber, Warden for the Municipality of Chester (MOC).
“With a renewed focus on local quality food production, the potential for growth – pardon the
pun – is remarkable.”
Speakers at the event will share experiences and insight on the economic potential of farming
in Nova Scotia and climate change readiness. Sessions provide a variety of learning
opportunities, including the benefits of vending at farmers’ markets, business planning, and
agri-tourism, among others. A panel will address marketing and exporting in the industry.
One of the highlights of the day is an address by keynote Patricia Bishop from TapRoot Farms,
who, for over a decade, owns and operates a flourishing farming business and agri-tourism
destination in the Valley region. Her business model, “Community Shared Agriculture”, has
achieved notable success and her passion for the industry shows in the farm’s ecological
practices and values.
Erin Lowe, one of the event organizers and Economic Development Officer for MOC,
commented, “Given the diversity and quality of topics, the level of professional development,
and the networking opportunities available, we feel that anyone attending this event will take
away something valuable.”
