MEDIA RELEASE
MUNICIPALITY OF CHESTER – Residents of the Municipality of Chester can expect changes to
their waste collection schedule come January 1, 2020.
For many, the change will simply be a matter of putting their waste out an hour earlier as the
new start time for collection will begin at 7:00 a.m. instead of 8:00 a.m.
“A 7:00 a.m. waste collection start time not only aligns with our municipal neighbours, the
Municipality of Lunenburg and HRM,” explains Christa Rafuse, Director of Solid Waste for the
Municipality. “It also guarantees that trucks will be able to unload at Kaizer Meadow Landfill by
closing time, eliminating the need to keep waste on trucks overnight and starting later the next
day.”
For others, an earlier start time is only one of the changes to be implemented in the New Year.
The Municipality is working with its waste collection contractor, GE Environmental, to optimize
collection routes to make them more efficient timewise and better organized. Although these
changes could impact the day and week for some residents, the overall impact will be positive in
terms of operational advantages.
“With the increase in waste volumes due to community growth and biweekly bulky waste
collection, we need to partner with our contractor to find ways to balance and improve waste
collection in a way that makes sense,” says Allen Webber, Warden for the Municipality.
By grouping some areas so their collection corresponds with when a truck is passing by and
balancing out the number of daily stops, waste collection will be more efficient and better
organized.
To help with awareness in time for the implementation date, letters will be delivered door-to-
door on the collection routes affected by the change to ensure that the transition is as smooth
as possible. To find out if you are in an area affected by route changes, please visit
