BYLAW NO. 958
A Bylaw to hold a referendum on pursuing street number changes.
WHEREAS:
A. Section 245 of the Municipal Act authorizes Council, by bylaw, to hold a referendum to
obtain the electors’ opinion on a question that affects the municipality and with which the
council has power to deal; and
B. Council is desirous of obtaining the electors’ opinion on the naming of streets in the mu-
nicipality;
NOW THEREFORE, the council of the Town of Oliver, in open meeting assembled, ENACTS
AS FOLLOWS:
1. This bylaw may be cited for all purposes as "Street Name Referendum Bylaw No. 958,
1999."
2. Voting day shall be Saturday, November 20, 1999. Polls shall be open from 8:00 A.M. to
8:00 P.M. and shall be located at the Oliver Community Hall.
3. An Advance voting day shall be held from 8:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Wednesday, Novem-
ber 10, 1999 at the Oliver Municipal Office.
4. The Question on the Ballot shall be:
“Oliver municipal council proposes to:
(a) Reintroduce street names which better reflect the natural and human history of Oliver
than the current road numbering system;
(b) Simplify the house numbering system to eliminate the long, five-digit numbers cur-
rently in place; and
(c) Base the house numbering system in Oliver rather than at the United States Border,
25 km away.
Are you in favour of the above? ____ Yes ____ No”
Read a first, second and third time on the 12th day of July, 1999.
Adopted on the 13th day of September, 1999.
