MEDIA ADVISORY
The use of disposable sanitizing and flushable wipes is increasing as a result of the COVID-19
pandemic. While the Municipality of Chester encourages disinfecting your homes and
workspaces, we are concerned with the number of wipes being found in the central sewer
systems.
Many of these wipes are labelled “biodegradable” or “flushable”. However, these wipes do not
break down and end up obstructing the central sewer equipment causing unnecessary
shutdowns to the system. Depending on where the blockage occurs, it could also put your home
at risk of a sewer backup.
We urge that these types of wipes are thrown in the garbage, where they belong.
